On a private well
RO membranes do not like untreated well water. Iron, hydrogen sulfide and hardness can foul a membrane quickly. That is why, on a Ranches well, RO usually comes after a whole-house system that handles those first. With that pre-treatment in place, the RO at the kitchen reduces remaining dissolved solids and gives you a consistent drinking water tap.
RO is also commonly certified for specific contaminants under NSF/ANSI 58. If a lab test of your well finds something specific, check that the exact model is certified for it. RO is not a substitute for addressing bacteria found in a well; that needs its own treatment and follow-up testing.
On City of Sunrise water
Sunrise disinfects with chloramine, with highest running annual averages of 3.3 to 3.5 ppm in its 2025 reports. RO carbon stages address the taste and odor at the drinking tap, and the membrane reduces dissolved solids such as sodium, which Sunrise's Southwest service area report lists at 60.4 ppm.
Why alkaline
RO water is low in minerals. Living Water's alkaline RO adds a remineralization stage for taste. It is a preference, not a health claim. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
Installation notes for Ranches homes
- The RO drain line connects to the kitchen drain, which on most Ranches properties goes to a septic system; RO reject water is a small, steady flow worth knowing about.
- Well pressure matters: RO needs adequate pressure, and a pressure tank cycling low can reduce output. Jorge checks it.
- Fridge and ice-maker lines can be added.
On larger homes, the kitchen may be a long way from the well equipment. That does not change the RO itself, but it can affect pressure at the sink.
RO, whole-home or both
On a well, RO is rarely the only treatment. On utility water, it can be. See the drinking water system guide and whole-home filtration.
Many Ranches owners start with whole-house treatment, live with it for a few weeks, then decide whether they still want RO for drinking water. That is a reasonable way to spend only on what you notice.
