The system
- Number and type of stages, including remineralization. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
- Tank or tankless. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Faucet and optional fridge or ice-maker line.
Well water changes the math
Putting RO directly on untreated well water risks fouling the membrane with iron, sulfur and hardness, which shortens its life and raises upkeep. On most Ranches wells, the honest quote includes the whole-house stages that protect the RO, or confirms they are already in place and maintained. If you already have a working well system, RO at the kitchen is a smaller project.
Also ask whether the pre-treatment is sized for the RO alone or for the whole house; those are very different projects with different costs.
Pressure and flow
RO output depends on water pressure. On a well, pressure depends on the pump and pressure tank settings, and can drop when other fixtures, the barn or irrigation run. Jorge checks pressure during the test; some homes need a booster pump, which belongs in the quote as a line item.
A booster pump also needs an outlet under or near the sink.
Ongoing costs
- Replacement schedule for pre-filters, membrane and post-filters at your water quality.
- Whether you can change them yourself.
- Water sent to drain, which on most Ranches properties goes to the septic system.
See RO maintenance and operating costs and bottled water vs. RO.
Comparing quotes
Ask each installer what water test the quote is based on, whether it assumes pre-treatment, and what happens to membrane life without it. Two RO quotes for a well home are only comparable if both answer those questions. See how to compare water treatment quotes.
Typical Ranches setups
- Well with existing, working treatment: RO at the kitchen is a modest add-on.
- Well with no treatment: plan the whole-house stages first; RO comes last.
- Sunrise water: RO alone, with carbon stages for chloramine.
