Well or utility water: two different budgets
On a well, you are paying for treatment that a utility would otherwise do: iron and sulfur removal, softening and a drinking water stage. On City of Sunrise water, the plant has already softened the water, so a home system is mainly about chloramine and drinking water. Know which you have before comparing any quotes.
What drives a well system's price
- Test results: iron level, sulfur, hardness and pH decide the stages and media.
- Lab findings: bacteria or specific contaminants need certified equipment and follow-up testing.
- Flow: well pump output and household demand set equipment size.
- Layout: distance between the well, the equipment and the house; whether barns or guest houses are included.
- Drain and power for backwash and regeneration.
Equipment location matters more on acreage: a system near the well, in a pump house or garage, may need a longer run to the house or extra protection from weather.
Spend where it matters
On a large property, the biggest savings often come from not treating everything. Full treatment on the house line, an iron filter only on irrigation that stains walls or fences, and no treatment where it adds nothing. Ask any installer to show which lines each stage serves.
What a good quote includes
- The test and any lab results it is based on.
- Each stage, its purpose and model.
- Installation details: location, plumbing, drain, power, bypass.
- Maintenance schedule for every stage and written warranty terms.

Ownership costs
Ask about salt, media replacement, filter changes, service visits and the cost of yearly lab tests that Florida DOH recommends for private wells. A system that is cheap to install but expensive to maintain is not a bargain. See annual cost of owning a whole-home water filter.
Budget for the yearly certified lab test as part of owning a well, separate from equipment upkeep.
