What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used for decades in coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water, and in some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly, so they are found at low levels in water and soil in many places. PFOA and PFOS are the most studied.
Well owners: nobody else is testing
EPA's fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5) had public water systems test for 29 PFAS. Private wells are not part of it. If PFAS is a concern for your well, a state-certified laboratory can test for it; ask the lab which PFAS compounds and which method it uses, and what its reporting limits are. Florida DOH links to the state list of certified labs.
Before you test, think about nearby land uses you know of, and mention them to the lab. Florida DOH notes that past and present land uses can call for additional well tests beyond bacteria and nitrate.
Homes on Sunrise water
The City of Sunrise sampled its Springtree, Sawgrass and Southwest systems for UCMR 5. Its water quality page says customers can request the results by emailing the Director of Utilities with the subject line "UCMR5 Data" and their home address, or by calling (954) 888-6000. EPA's national PFAS rules are still being implemented; check EPA's site for the current status.
Filters: what certification to look for
- NSF/ANSI 53 (carbon and other filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis), with a specific PFOA/PFOS reduction claim.
- The claim must be on the exact model.
- On well water, pre-treatment for iron and hardness protects the PFAS-rated stage and helps it perform as listed.
RO and certain carbon systems are the technologies usually certified, but not every product in those categories carries the claim.
What Living Water does and does not claim
Jorge can explain options and help you check a model's listing. The free in-home test does not measure PFAS. Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS; if that is your goal, choose based on a verified certification listing.
