Where it pays off
For a hotel or restaurant, scale shows up as service calls on water heaters, dishwashers and ice machines, spotting on glassware, and energy lost heating through mineral layers. Sizing from water bills and a measured hardness number avoids an undersized unit that wears out resin early or an oversized one that costs more than necessary. For a house, the value is mainly in fixtures and the water heater, which is why the hardness number decides it.
Alternatives to a softener
If your hardness is moderate and the concern is spotting on glass or scale in a coffee machine, cheaper steps often work: a squeegee after showers, rinse aid in the dishwasher, and descaling small appliances on the manufacturer's schedule. For a business whose main concern is taste in coffee or ice, filtration may matter more than softening. A test makes that call, not a sales script.
