What the reports show
| Service area | Fluoride (April 2025 sample) |
|---|---|
| Springtree | 0.70 ppm |
| Sawgrass | 0.74 ppm |
| Southwest | 0.59 ppm |
The regulatory maximum is 4 ppm. These samples were taken before the state law took effect, so the next reports will show the post-July 2025 levels. Ask the Utilities Department at (954) 888-6000 for current numbers.
The state law, briefly
Florida's 2025 Senate Bill 700 prohibits the use of any additive in a public water supply that is not for the purpose of improving water quality. In practice, Florida utilities stopped adding fluoride on July 1, 2025. Naturally occurring fluoride is not removed by that law.
How fluoride is reduced at home
- Reverse osmosis is a common method; the membrane reduces many dissolved minerals, including fluoride.
- Activated alumina filters are another method.
- Standard carbon filters generally are not designed for fluoride.
Whatever you choose, check the exact model's certification listing for fluoride reduction. An under-sink RO in Sunrise treats drinking and cooking water.
Whole-home or kitchen only?
Most people who want less fluoride want it in water they drink and cook with, which is why reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual approach. Treating every shower and toilet for fluoride is rarely practical. If you also want chloramine removed throughout the house, the usual Sunrise setup is a whole-home carbon system for chloramine plus an RO at the kitchen sink for drinking water.
Remember that Sunrise water already differs a little by service area. The April 2025 samples ranged from 0.59 ppm in Southwest to 0.74 ppm in Sawgrass, so neighbors on different plants started from slightly different numbers. After the state law took effect, added fluoride ended everywhere, and only natural levels remain. Read the next set of annual reports for the post-law numbers in your area.
A neutral note
People have different views on fluoride. This page does not make health claims either way. If you have dental or health questions about fluoride, ask your dentist or doctor. Our job is to explain what is in the water and which equipment can change it.
Testing
If you want to know your home's current fluoride level, a certified lab test gives a documented number. Jorge can explain your service area's report during the free visit. See water testing in Sunrise.
