SUNRISE · WATER TREATMENT

Water Filtration & Treatment in Sunrise

Sunrise homes get their water from the City of Sunrise Utilities Department, which pumps groundwater from the Biscayne Aquifer and treats it at three plants: Springtree, Sawgrass and Southwest. The water is softened, disinfected with chloramine (chlorine plus ammonia) and meets drinking water standards, so home treatment in Sunrise is mostly about chloramine taste and smell, spotting and scale, and better drinking water at the kitchen sink. Jorge Canela tests your water free at home and recommends only what fits.

One city utility, three service areas

Sunrise is one of the Broward cities that produces its own water. According to the city's 2025 Water Quality Reports, the Utilities Department operates four well fields drawing from the Biscayne Aquifer and three water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 51.5 million gallons a day. It serves roughly 236,400 people in Sunrise, Weston, Davie and Southwest Ranches.

The city splits its system into three service areas, each with its own annual report:

  • Springtree: lime softening, then disinfection at the Springtree Water Treatment Plant.
  • Sawgrass: membrane softening plus an ion exchange system, then disinfection at the Sawgrass plant.
  • Southwest: lime softening, then disinfection at the Southwest plant.

The city publishes a service area map on its Water Quality Report page, so you can see which plant normally feeds your street. Questions go to the Utilities Department at (954) 888-6000.

Chloramine most of the year, free chlorine for a few weeks

Sunrise adds chlorine and ammonia to form chloramine, a longer-lasting disinfectant. In the 2025 reports, the highest running annual averages were 3.3 parts per million in Sawgrass, 3.4 in Springtree and 3.5 in Southwest, all under the regulatory maximum of 4.0.

Once a year the city switches to free chlorine for a few weeks to clean the pipes; in 2026 that ran from April 27 to May 25. The city notes you may notice a change in taste, odor or color during that time, and it asks aquarium owners to check dechlorination for sensitive species.

That chloramine residual is what most Sunrise households notice at the shower and the glass. See the chlorine and chloramine filter page for Sunrise for how to choose a system that is rated for it.

Fluoride, sodium and other numbers in the report

The 2025 reports list fluoride samples from April 2025 at 0.70 ppm (Springtree), 0.74 ppm (Sawgrass) and 0.59 ppm (Southwest). Since July 1, 2025, Florida law prohibits adding substances to public water that are not for improving water quality, which ended added fluoride statewide; some fluoride occurs naturally. Sodium ranged from 38.7 to 60.4 ppm depending on the area.

What fits a Sunrise home

Smells, stains and comfort problems

Some of the most common calls are not about the city water at all:

What filtration does and does not do

Sunrise's water is treated and monitored to meet federal and state standards. Home treatment does not replace that. It lets you choose how your water tastes, smells and behaves at home. For any specific contaminant, a system must be certified for that contaminant under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard, so check the listing for the exact model.
