Driver one: your measured hardness
Springtree and Southwest water is lime-softened and Sawgrass water is membrane-softened with ion exchange, according to the city's 2025 reports. That usually leaves less hardness than raw groundwater, so a home softener may be smaller, or unnecessary. A private well is a different story; untreated well water can need a much larger unit.
Capacity and household use
Capacity is matched to hardness times daily water use. More people, more bathrooms or a pool fill line means more capacity. Oversizing wastes resin; undersizing means constant regeneration and more salt.
Home vs. business softening
For a Sunrise house, the softener protects fixtures, glass and the water heater, and capacity is set by family size and hardness. For a business, the unit is sized around equipment and peak flow: a restaurant's dishwasher and ice machine, a gym's showers, or a laundry's washers. Commercial plants often use larger or twin tanks so soft water is available while one tank regenerates, which changes both the equipment and the installation cost.
If you run a business, list the equipment the softener should protect and when your busiest hours are. Jorge uses that with the hardness test to size the plant.
Either way, the quote should list the tank size, resin volume and valve model so you can compare it fairly with any other offer.
Control valve and features
- Metered (demand-based) regeneration vs. timer-based.
- Bypass valve for service.
- Combined units that also filter chloramine cost more than a softener alone.
Installation
- Location on the main line, garage or exterior.
- Drain for regeneration water.
- Electrical outlet.
- Splitting irrigation off so outdoor water is not softened.
Ongoing costs to ask about
Salt (or potassium chloride) use, resin life, and service visits. Sunrise's reports list sodium at 38.7 to 60.4 ppm in tap water depending on area; if you are tracking sodium, ask about potassium chloride and its cost difference. For commercial plants, ask about the service schedule. See water softener cost in Florida.
Ways to keep the cost reasonable
- Test first; do not size from a guess.
- Leave irrigation off the softened side.
- Choose metered regeneration so salt is used only when needed.
- Ask whether a filter alone solves your main complaint.
