How Sunrise softens water before it reaches you
The City of Sunrise Utilities Department draws water from the Biscayne Aquifer, which naturally carries calcium and magnesium. Its 2025 reports describe the treatment: Springtree and Southwest use lime softening; Sawgrass uses a membrane softening process in addition to an ion exchange system. The reports do not publish a single hardness number for each home, so the practical way to know is to measure at your tap.
When a softener still makes sense
- Commercial equipment: restaurants, gyms, laundries, car washes and offices with boilers, dishwashers, ice machines or water heaters that run constantly often want water softer than city water.
- Persistent spotting or scale: if your test confirms measurable hardness and you see buildup on glass and fixtures.
- Private well: untreated well water is often much harder than city water.
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses, sized from your test and water use.
When you probably do not need one
If your test shows low hardness and your main complaint is chlorine-like taste or smell, a softener is the wrong tool. That is a disinfectant issue, handled by a whole-home filter. See softener vs. filter in Sunrise for the side-by-side.
How ion exchange works
Water passes through resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium for sodium (or potassium). When the resin is full, the unit regenerates with brine and rinses to a drain. Sizing depends on hardness, household size and daily use. Too small and it regenerates constantly; too large and the resin sits idle. Note that Sunrise's reports already list sodium at 38.7 to 60.4 ppm depending on the area, so if you track sodium, ask about potassium chloride as the regenerant.
Softener or conditioner?
Salt-free conditioners change how minerals behave rather than removing them. Ion exchange removes them. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener before you choose.
What the visit includes
Jorge measures hardness and checks the disinfectant at your tap, looks at the plumbing and drain location, and recommends a softener only if the numbers support it. For pricing factors, see water softener cost in Sunrise.
Commercial softening in Sunrise
For Sunrise businesses, from offices and retail to restaurants and gyms, the softener is sized from the hardness test and the equipment it protects: ice machines, dishwashers, boilers and water heaters. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for hotels, restaurants, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms.
