Why spots still happen with softened city water
Springtree and Southwest water is lime-softened and Sawgrass water is membrane-softened with ion exchange, according to the City of Sunrise's 2025 reports. Softening lowers calcium and magnesium; it does not remove every dissolved mineral. Sodium, for example, is listed at 38.7 to 60.4 ppm in those reports. Anything dissolved can leave a residue when a drop dries.
Where Sunrise homes see it
- Glass shower doors and mirrors.
- Dishwasher glasses.
- Faucet aerators and shower heads with white crust.
- Cars and windows hit by sprinklers, especially if irrigation comes from a well, which is not softened at all.
Measure before you buy
Jorge measures hardness and total dissolved solids at your tap. High hardness points to a softener. Low hardness with moderate dissolved solids points to drying habits, a squeegee, or RO for drinking glasses. Spots from sprinklers point to the irrigation source, not your indoor water.
Quick fixes that cost nothing
- Squeegee shower glass after each use. Spots form when drops dry in place.
- Use a rinse aid in the dishwasher.
- Clean aerators and shower heads with white vinegar to dissolve crust.
- Point sprinklers away from windows and cars, especially if they run on a well.
If spots still appear quickly after these steps, measure the water. In Sunrise, the answer can differ by service area: the Sawgrass plant uses membrane softening plus ion exchange, while Springtree and Southwest use lime softening. Neighbors on different plants can see slightly different results on glass, which is another reason to test your own tap before choosing equipment.
Softener vs. conditioner
- Ion-exchange softener: removes hardness minerals; reduces spotting and scale. Uses salt and a drain.
- Salt-free conditioner: changes how minerals form scale; usually does not stop spots on glass.

Scale in appliances
Scale inside water heaters, coffee makers and ice machines shortens equipment life. For businesses in Sunrise running commercial dishwashers or ice machines, a softening plant is often the practical answer.
What it costs to fix
If a softener is justified, the price depends on capacity, control valve and installation. See water softener cost in Sunrise. Jorge gives an itemized quote only after the test shows a softener fits.
