SUNRISE · CHLORAMINE FILTER

Chlorine & Chloramine Water Filter in Sunrise

The City of Sunrise Utilities Department disinfects its water with chloramine, made by adding chlorine and ammonia, and switches to free chlorine for a few weeks each spring to clean the pipes. Chloramine is more stable than chlorine and harder for a basic carbon filter to remove, so a Sunrise filter should be specifically rated for chloramine. Living Water describes its Puronics whole-home systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.

What Sunrise's reports show

Service area2025 chloramine (highest running annual average)Range
Sawgrass3.3 ppm0.2 to 4
Springtree3.4 ppm0.9 to 4
Southwest3.5 ppm2.1 to 4

All are under the regulatory maximum of 4.0 ppm. The disinfectant is there to protect water in the city's pipes.

Why plain carbon may struggle

Free chlorine is removed quickly by ordinary activated carbon. Chloramine reacts more slowly, so a pitcher or small carbon cartridge may let much of it through, especially at higher flow. Filters meant for chloramine usually use catalytic carbon and more contact time. That matters in Sunrise because the city's chloramine levels sit in the upper part of the allowed range.

How long a chloramine filter lasts in Sunrise

Media life is measured in gallons treated, and chloramine uses up catalytic carbon faster than plain chlorine would. Two Sunrise details shape that estimate:

  • The levels are steady. Running annual averages of 3.3 to 3.5 ppm mean the filter works against a fairly consistent load most of the year, so a sizing estimate based on your household's water use is realistic.
  • The spring switch is short. During the few weeks of free chlorine, carbon removes the disinfectant more easily, which does not meaningfully change long-term media life.

When you compare systems, ask for the rated capacity in gallons for chloramine specifically, the flow rate in gallons per minute that the rating was tested at, and how you will know when the media is spent. A system that is undersized for a busy household can let chloramine through at peak times, such as two showers running at once. Jorge checks the chloramine residual at your tap during the free test, so the estimate is based on your water rather than a brochure number.

Certification to look for

Look for a listing under NSF/ANSI 42 that specifically includes chloramine reduction, not just chlorine. Check the listing for the exact model and the flow rate it was tested at. For an under-sink RO, the carbon pre-filter is what handles chloramine before the membrane.

Whole-home or point-of-use?

  • Whole-home: treats showers, laundry and every faucet. See whole-home filtration in Sunrise.
  • Under-sink RO: treats drinking water only. See RO in Sunrise.
  • Shower filters: small and limited contact time; check any chloramine claim carefully.

Aquariums, dialysis and the spring switch

The city notes that some aquatic species are sensitive to chlorine and suggests aquarium owners ask their pet store about dechlorination during the free-chlorine period (April 27 to May 25 in 2026). It also notifies dialysis providers. For home dialysis questions, talk to your doctor or dialysis specialist, not a filter seller.

Common questions

Does Sunrise use chlorine or chloramine?

Chloramine most of the year, by adding chlorine and ammonia. The city switches to free chlorine for a few weeks each spring.

Will a pitcher filter remove chloramine?

Many are not designed for it. Check whether the model's listing specifically includes chloramine reduction.

What certification should a chloramine filter have?

An NSF/ANSI 42 listing that includes chloramine reduction for that exact model.

Does a whole-home system remove chloramine?

Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring systems as removing chlorine and chloramine.

Can I smell whether chloramine is getting through?

Sometimes, but a test is more reliable. Chloramine has a milder odor than free chlorine, so a residual test at the tap is the better check.
