System design
- Number of stages and whether there is an alkaline or remineralization stage.
- Tank vs. tankless: tankless units often cost more up front but save cabinet space. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Production rate and waste-water ratio.
- Faucet style and finish.
Installation in your kitchen
- Whether the sink has a spare faucet hole or the countertop needs drilling (stone counters take more work).
- Drain connection under the sink.
- A line to the refrigerator or ice maker.
- Space under the sink, including garbage disposal clearance.
- Condo association requirements.
The chloramine factor
Sunrise's 2025 reports list chloramine running annual averages of 3.3 to 3.5 ppm across the three service areas. RO membranes are damaged by disinfectant, so the carbon pre-filter must be suitable for chloramine and changed on schedule. Ask what the pre-filter is rated for and its replacement interval, because that drives ongoing cost.
Water use and waste water
RO systems send part of the water to the drain as they work, and that ratio differs by design. Two things affect what this means for your Sunrise utility bill:
- How much drinking and cooking water your household uses.
- The system's efficiency rating and whether it has a permeate pump or tankless design.
Ask for the waste-water ratio on the quote. For most families the difference is modest compared with filter changes, but it is a fair comparison point between models. Sunrise water already has lower dissolved solids after plant softening than raw groundwater, which helps membrane life compared with untreated well water.
Ongoing costs to ask about
- Pre-filter and post-filter replacement intervals.
- Membrane life with your water.
- Whether the alkaline cartridge is separate.
- What a service visit includes.
See RO filter replacement cost and bottled water vs. RO.
What your quote should show
The model name, certifications (NSF/ANSI 58 for RO claims), equipment and labor listed separately, warranty, and the maintenance schedule. Living Water offers financing through its financing partners if you want to spread the cost.
Ways to keep RO costs reasonable
- Buy the number of stages your water needs, not the most stages available.
- Change pre-filters on schedule to protect the more expensive membrane.
- Choose a faucet that fits your existing hole if you want to avoid drilling.
- Ask whether filter changes can be scheduled with your other service visits.
