What changed
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says its Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants discontinued fluoride on June 6, 2025, to comply with County Resolution R-370-25 and Florida Senate Bill 700, effective July 1, 2025. WASD says this does not significantly affect treatment or compliance. Because Surfside buys its water from WASD and does not treat it, the change applies to Surfside taps too.
Natural fluoride remains
Fluoride occurs naturally in the soil and in Biscayne Aquifer water. WASD says main system levels have ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 ppm since fluoridation stopped. The 2025 table shows a full-year range that includes months before the change, so use WASD's note, or test, for current levels.
For context, the federal maximum contaminant level for fluoride is 4 ppm, as listed in WASD's table.
Ways to reduce fluoride at home
| Method | Fluoride | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Reverse osmosis | Common method | Check the model's NSF/ANSI 58 listing for fluoride |
| Activated carbon | Not designed for it | Good for chloramine taste if rated |
| Whole-home filter | Not the usual approach | Treats chloramine at every tap |

Planning RO in a Surfside condo
- Check association rules on plumbing work in units.
- Confirm fluoride reduction on the exact model's listing and its rated capacity.
- Route RO water to the fridge if you want it in ice too.
- Change filters on schedule; certified performance assumes it.
- Add a leak stop under the sink.
If you want both fluoride reduction and the chloramine taste gone, a single RO with chloramine-suited pre-filters handles both at the kitchen tap.
No health claims
We do not make health claims for or against fluoride. Questions about fluoride and dental care belong with your dentist or doctor. Since fluoride is no longer added, many Surfside households now choose RO for taste and chloramine rather than fluoride; the system is the same, and what you check on the listing is what differs.
If someone in your household has a specific reason to limit fluoride, bring it up with your doctor or dentist first; they can tell you what level matters for you, and then the certification listing tells you which equipment meets it.
Reading older reports
WASD notes it had added fluoride since 1958 on the advice of public health professionals, until the 2025 change. Older reports show fluoride as an additive at higher levels. Reports from 2026 onward reflect only natural levels.
