SWEETWATER · FLUORIDE FILTER

Fluoride Water Filter in Sweetwater

Fluoride is no longer added to Sweetwater's water. Miami-Dade WASD, which supplies the whole city, stopped adding fluoride at its Alexander Orr, Jr., John E. Preston and Hialeah plants as of June 6, 2025, and Florida law now prohibits additives in public water systems that do not meet the definition of a water quality additive. WASD reports natural fluoride of about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm since then. Reverse osmosis certified for fluoride is a common way to reduce it further.

May 15, 2025Florida Senate Bill 700 approved by the Governor
June 6, 2025WASD's three regional plants stop adding fluoride

The statute, section 403.859 of the Florida Statutes, prohibits using any additive in a public water system that does not meet the definition of a water quality additive.

Why the 2025 report still shows 1 ppm

WASD's 2025 report summarizes the whole year, so its fluoride line still shows 1 ppm (range 0.1 to 1) from the months before the change. A footnote explains that after fluoridation stopped, main system levels ranged from 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, from fluoride naturally present in the soil and the Biscayne Aquifer.

Reducing fluoride at home

  • Reverse osmosis: the membrane rejects most dissolved minerals, including fluoride.
  • Activated alumina: a specialty medium whose performance depends on contact time and pH.
  • Ordinary carbon: most pitchers, fridge filters and whole-home carbon systems are not designed for fluoride.

Check that the exact model is certified for fluoride reduction, typically under NSF/ANSI 58 for RO.

RO in a Sweetwater kitchen

Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO is a multi-stage system with a dedicated faucet and a final stage that adds minerals back. It fits apartments, condos and houses. Ask Jorge for the specific model's certification listing to confirm its reduction claims. Compare designs in alkaline vs. standard RO.

Why not a whole-home system for fluoride

Whole-home systems are built around carbon for chloramine, taste and odor. Reducing fluoride across every shower and toilet would take a much larger and more complex system for little practical benefit, since fluoride concerns center on what you drink. Treating the kitchen tap with RO is the targeted approach, and many households pair it with a whole-home filter for chloramine.

Infant formula, cooking and coffee

RO water at the kitchen tap covers the uses people ask about most: drinking, cooking, coffee and preparing formula. Questions about fluoride and a baby or child belong with your pediatrician or dentist; this page does not take a position for or against fluoride.

Common questions

Is fluoride added to Sweetwater water?

No. WASD stopped adding fluoride as of June 6, 2025.

How much fluoride is left?

WASD reports natural levels of about 0.1 to 0.3 ppm in the main system since fluoridation stopped.

Does RO remove fluoride?

RO membranes reduce fluoride. Check the model's certification for fluoride reduction.

Does a whole-home filter remove fluoride?

Whole-home carbon systems are generally not designed for fluoride.

Should I filter fluoride?

That is your choice. Ask your dentist or doctor about health questions.
