Is a whole-home system right for your Sweetwater home?
Sweetwater has a lot of apartments and condos alongside single-family streets. Whole-home filtration fits best when:
- You own a house or townhome and have access to the main line.
- You notice the chloramine in showers, laundry or on your skin, not only in drinking water.
- You want filtered water at every tap, including bathroom sinks and the ice maker.
If you rent an apartment, an under-sink RO is usually the practical choice.
What it removes from WASD water
WASD adds ammonia so it combines with chlorine and forms chloramine, which protects the water through miles of county pipe. Its 2025 report lists 2.5 ppm in the main system, ranging up to 4.0. A whole-home system with catalytic carbon is built for that. Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. See the city water system.
How it is sized
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Bathrooms and simultaneous showers | Sets the flow the system must handle with enough contact time |
| Main line size and pressure | Affects valve and tank choice |
| Where the line enters | Determines the install spot and protection from sun and rain |
| Irrigation on the same line | Ideally split off so lawn water is not filtered |
| Hardness at your tap | Decides whether a softening stage is worth adding |
Hardness: test before adding a softener
The plants that generally serve Sweetwater, Hialeah and John E. Preston, soften the water with lime before it leaves. That often means a carbon system alone is enough. If your test shows hardness causing scale, a softening stage can be added. Read softener vs. filter in Sweetwater.
Maintenance and the yearly chlorine switch
Ask how long the media lasts at your household's use, and what service it needs. Once a year WASD switches from chloramine to free chlorine for about two weeks; in 2026 it ran from September 28 through October 11. A chloramine-rated system handles free chlorine too, so nothing changes for you.
