Your home type sets the starting point
| Home | Usual system | Main cost drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment or condo | Under-sink alkaline RO | Tank or tankless, stages, faucet, countertop |
| Townhome | RO, sometimes compact whole-home | Space at the main line, association rules |
| Single-family house | Whole-home chloramine system, often plus RO | Flow rate, media amount, bathrooms, install location |
| Restaurant or laundry | Softening plant, sometimes plus filtration | Hardness, daily use, peak flow |
What the test changes
WASD treats Sweetwater's water at plants that soften it with lime and disinfect it with chloramine. If your tap shows low hardness, you skip the softener. If chloramine is your only complaint, a carbon system or RO covers it. If you are on a well or near septic systems, the job is different and so is the cost. Testing first is how you avoid paying for stages you do not need.
Installation details
- Where the main line enters, and whether equipment needs protection from sun and rain.
- A drain and outlet nearby, for softeners and some filters.
- Whether irrigation can be split off so you are not filtering lawn water.
- Countertop drilling for an RO faucet.
- Owner or association approval for rentals and condos.
What a fair quote should list
- Exact equipment model and size.
- Installation labor and materials.
- Any plumbing modifications.
- Filter and media replacement schedule.
- Warranty terms in writing.
Compare quotes item by item. See how to compare water treatment quotes.
Costs after day one
Ask what gets replaced and when: carbon media, RO filters and membranes, softener salt. A system sized for WASD's chloramine handles the yearly free chlorine weeks without extra cost. See the annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
Ways to spend less
- Treat only what the test shows.
- In an apartment, start with RO; it may be all you need.
- In a house, consider whether chloramine bothers you in the shower before paying for whole-home treatment.
- Keep irrigation off the filtered line.
