Quick comparison
| Softener | Whole-home filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Targets | Calcium and magnesium | Chlorine, chloramine, taste, odor |
| Helps with | Scale, spots, soap scum | Pool-like smell and chemical taste |
| Uses salt | Yes (ion exchange) | No |
| Drain | Yes | Often, for backwashing models |
The two are often confused because both are sold as water treatment and both can sit near the main line. They solve different problems, and buying one for the other's job is the most common mistake we see in quotes.
What WASD already does
WASD's 2025 report describes lime treatment at Orr (south of SW 8 Street), similar treatment at Hialeah, and enhanced softening at Preston (both north of SW 8 Street). It also describes chloramine disinfection for the whole main system. In practice, many Tamiami homeowners notice chloramine before they notice scale.
That does not mean every Tamiami home is the same. Remaining hardness can vary, plumbing and water heaters age differently, and household habits differ. The point is to test before assuming that South Florida water automatically needs a softener.
Match the symptom
- Pool smell in the shower: filter
- Chemical taste in coffee: filter or under-sink RO
- White crust on fixtures that returns quickly: softener, after a hardness test
- Spots on glass shower doors: check hardness; habits may be enough
- Orange stains on walls: neither; that is irrigation well iron
If two or more of these apply, testing both numbers at once saves a second visit.
Self-check before the test
- Smell a glass of cold tap water away from the sink.
- Look at aerators and shower heads for thick white crust.
- Note whether the smell changes for a couple of weeks at a time; that matches WASD's free-chlorine periods.
Then confirm with numbers.
When to install both
If your hardness reading is high enough to bother you and chloramine does too, a softener and a whole-home filter can be designed together, with sizing and order set from your test so household flow is not restricted. General guide: softener vs. filter: which do you need.
For a business on the Trail, the pattern is often reversed: equipment such as ice machines, dishwashers and espresso machines may justify softening even when taste is not an issue. Living Water's ion-exchange softening plants are sized to that equipment after testing.

You will leave with both readings and a plain recommendation, which may be one system, both, or neither.
