Two labels, one disinfectant
WASD's report explains its process: chlorine is added as the primary disinfectant, then ammonia combines with it to form chloramine for the distribution system. West Miami's table reports the residual it measures as chlorine. Chloramine residuals are commonly measured as total chlorine, so the labels are not necessarily in conflict; ask West Miami Public Works (305-266-4214) if you want the city's explanation. For filter shopping, assume chloramine.
Why plain carbon struggles
- Chloramine reacts on carbon more slowly than free chlorine.
- Catalytic carbon speeds the reaction.
- Enough media and contact time matter at peak flow.
- An undersized filter lets chloramine through when showers and the washer run together.
West Miami's narrow residual range, 1.5 to 2.2 ppm in 2025, is helpful for sizing: it tells you what the filter will face on a typical day. Jorge still measures at your tap, because readings can differ with distance from the main and with how long water has sat in your pipes.
Certification
NSF/ANSI 42 lists chlorine and chloramine reduction separately. A product certified for chlorine is not automatically certified for chloramine. Check the exact model's listing and the flow rate it was tested at.
Ask the seller for the rated service flow and capacity too. A cartridge certified at a low flow will not perform the same when the whole family showers in the morning. For whole-home systems, media volume and tank size tell you how much contact time the water gets.
Choosing the setup
| Goal | Option |
|---|---|
| Every tap and shower | Whole-home system |
| Drinking and cooking | Under-sink alkaline RO |
| Both | Whole-home plus kitchen RO |
Living Water's Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems are described by Living Water as removing chloramine and chlorine.
For larger families, whole-home treatment is usually more practical than several shower filters, which need frequent cartridge changes and treat one fixture each.
Special cases
Aquarium and pond owners should use conditioners made for chloramine. People on home dialysis should follow their care team's water instructions. WASD also periodically converts temporarily to free chlorine for maintenance; a chloramine-rated filter handles that too.
If you keep fish, change water gradually and dose conditioner for the full tank volume; chloramine does not dissipate by letting water stand the way free chlorine can.
Measure first
Jorge measures total chlorine at your tap so the filter is sized for your water. Call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974. Read chloramine in city water: choosing a filter.
