The options side by side
| Option | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | No install, renter-friendly | Small batches; chloramine performance varies by model |
| Fridge filter | Cold water and ice | Short contact time; change dates slip |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Chloramine, chlorine, dissolved solids; dedicated faucet | Needs cabinet space and a drain |
| Whole-home | Every tap and shower | Does not lower dissolved solids like RO |
Why West Palm Beach is a little different
West Palm Beach drinks treated lake water from Clear Lake, fed by Grassy Waters Preserve, while most of its neighbors drink treated groundwater. The city handles natural taste and odor compounds at the plant with powdered activated carbon, then disinfects with UV and chloramine. What most people taste at the tap is the disinfectant, and in summer it changes character when the city switches to free chlorine for 21 days. A drinking-water system that handles both keeps the glass consistent year-round.
Why RO is the usual recommendation
- Carbon stages reduce chloramine and chlorine.
- The membrane lowers total dissolved solids; the 2025 city report lists 243 ppm from January 2025 sampling.
- The alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste.
- One faucet can also feed the fridge and ice maker.
Living Water's alkaline RO systems are multi-stage with a dedicated faucet. See under-sink RO in West Palm Beach.
When another option fits better
- Renting: a certified pitcher.
- Showers bother you more than the glass: start with whole-home filtration.
- Private well: the well test drives the system, often ending in RO at the kitchen.
- A specific contaminant: pick a model certified for it under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 and check the listing.
Condos and offices
In downtown towers and waterfront condos, the main line belongs to the building, so drinking-water treatment happens at your own sink. Under-sink RO fits in a standard kitchen cabinet in most units. Offices and gyms often use the same kind of system to replace water cooler deliveries, with a dedicated faucet where staff fill bottles. Building rules on contractor access and work hours are worth checking before the install date.
