How it works
- A sediment and carbon pre-filter takes out particles and chloramine.
- The RO membrane holds back most dissolved solids.
- A post-filter polishes taste.
- An alkaline stage adds minerals back for taste.
The result is a glass that tastes the same whether it is chloramine season or the city's 21-day summer chlorine switch.
West Palm Beach specifics
- Chloramine is the main disinfectant. The city's 2025 report lists a highest annual average residual of 3.2 ppm. Chloramine can wear on RO membranes, so the carbon pre-filter schedule matters.
- Dissolved solids. The report lists total dissolved solids of 243 ppm from January 2025. Jorge can measure your tap and the RO output so you see the difference.
- Surface water taste. The city uses powdered activated carbon at the plant for taste and odor. RO's carbon stages give a final polish at the sink.
What the install needs
- Space in the sink cabinet for filter housings and, on some models, a tank.
- A faucet hole; an unused sprayer or soap hole often works.
- A drain connection.
- Optional line to the refrigerator or ice maker.
Condo installs stay inside your unit; check building rules about contractor access and hours.
Who it suits
- Condo owners on Flagler Drive or anywhere the main line belongs to the building.
- Households that buy cases of bottled water.
- Anyone who notices the summer chlorine switch in their coffee or tea.
- Homes with whole-home filtration that want a further step at the kitchen.
- Offices and gyms that want a dedicated drinking-water tap.
If you rent and cannot drill or modify the sink, a certified pitcher may be the realistic option for now.
Alkaline, standard and certification
Standard RO water can taste flat to some people. Living Water's systems add an alkaline remineralization stage. That is a taste preference, not a health treatment. Comparison: alkaline vs. standard RO.
RO systems are commonly certified under NSF/ANSI 58. Certification applies to specific models and specific contaminants, so check the listing for the exact model if a particular contaminant matters to you.
Upkeep in plain terms
Plan on changing the pre-filter and post-filter on a regular schedule and the membrane less often. On West Palm Beach water, the pre-filter is doing the chloramine work, so that is the one not to stretch. Details: RO maintenance and operating costs.
