What is in your shower water
- Chloramine: added by Hollywood and present at your shower at a level the county reports for 3BC.
- Hardness: reduced at the plant by lime softening, membranes and RO.
- Temperature: long, hot showers dry skin regardless of water quality.
Soap and shampoo matter too. Some products leave more residue than others, and that can feel different depending on the water. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to see what helps.
Options people use
- Whole-home filtration for chloramine treats every shower. See whole-home filtration.
- Shower filters are small; check whether the exact model lists chloramine reduction.
- Habits: shorter, cooler showers and moisturizing afterward.
What a test shows
Jorge's test measures total and free chlorine, hardness, pH and TDS at your tap. That tells you whether there is a water factor you could change. It cannot diagnose skin. If you try a filter, compare how you feel over a few weeks.
If a reading shows a high chloramine residual at your tap, that is something a filter can change. If it shows little, look at other factors first.
What we do not claim
Water filtration is about comfort, not treatment. Eczema, psoriasis, rashes and persistent itching are for a dermatologist.
Families with several bathrooms
A shower filter on each head means several cartridges to track. If everyone in the house notices the same thing, one whole-home system at the main line is often simpler to maintain.
Hot water and the water heater
Very hot showers strip oils from skin, whatever the water quality. Many water heaters are set hotter than needed. Lowering the setting slightly and keeping showers shorter costs nothing and helps many people. If you also want chloramine reduced, a whole-home filter treats the water before it reaches the heater.
Babies and sensitive skin
If you have questions about bathing a baby or managing sensitive skin, ask your pediatrician or dermatologist. They can tell you whether water changes are worth trying. Jorge can then explain the water side in plain words.
