What PFAS are
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have been used for decades in nonstick, stain-resistant and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly. PFOA and PFOS are the best known, and newer federal drinking water rules set limits for several PFAS that utilities are phasing in.
Where Westchester's results are
WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report has a separate table for contaminants with recently set standards. For the Main System, which serves Westchester through the Orr plant, it lists PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS and a Hazard Index for certain PFAS mixtures. The report notes that initial regulatory compliance monitoring is underway. Read the table on miamidade.gov yourself and note which system and year each number applies to.
Living Water does not turn those numbers into a safety verdict, and no salesperson should.
Certification is the whole question
- NSF/ANSI 53: filters, including many carbon systems, for specific health-related claims
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems
- The listing must name PFOA and PFOS reduction for the exact model
- The claim holds only while filters are replaced on schedule
What we will and won't say
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS is your main concern, Jorge will tell you to verify certification for any system you consider, including RO, before you buy. What Living Water does offer for Westchester homes is under-sink alkaline RO for drinking water and whole-home filtration for chloramine taste and odor.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the exact model number, and does its listing name PFOA and PFOS reduction?
- Was it certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58?
- What capacity is the claim based on, and when do cartridges or the membrane need replacing to keep it?
- Does the claim cover the system as installed, or one component?
A filter past its rated capacity no longer matches its certification, so the replacement schedule matters as much as the purchase.
Private wells
WASD's report does not cover private wells. A certified lab can test a well for PFAS; ask which method it uses. See well water treatment in Westchester. Questions: call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
