Four options compared
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher filter | Taste, renters, low cost to start | Small volume, frequent cartridges, check chloramine claim |
| Refrigerator filter | Convenience at the fridge | Limited capacity; replacement often skipped |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Drinking and cooking water, lower dissolved solids | One faucet; filters on a schedule; some water to drain |
| Whole-home city system | Chloramine at every tap and shower | Not designed as a drinking-water polishing stage |
What Westchester's water tells you
WASD's Orr plant lime-softens and disinfects with chloramine, and WASD stopped adding fluoride in June 2025. If the chemical taste is your issue, any option certified for chloramine reduction can help. If you want lower dissolved minerals, only RO does that. If you want treated water in showers too, add a whole-home system.
Mid-century homes and the kitchen
In Westchester's 1950s and 1960s houses, an under-sink system often goes into an original or remodeled cabinet. Jorge checks space, faucet options and whether the RO can feed the fridge, which can retire the fridge cartridge.
Questions to ask about any system
- Which contaminants is the exact model certified to reduce, and under which NSF/ANSI standard?
- How often are filters replaced at our usage?
- Is the faucet dedicated or shared?
- What happens if we skip a replacement?

Bottled water versus a system
Many Westchester families buy cases of bottled water every week. That works, but it means storage, carrying and plastic. A filtered tap changes the routine: water for drinking, cooking rice and beans, coffee and ice, all from the kitchen. To compare the two over time, use bottled water vs. reverse osmosis with your own household's numbers.
Renting or owning
Renters in apartments and duplexes usually start with a pitcher or ask the landlord about under-sink RO. Owners of single-family houses have every option, including a whole-home system at the main line. If you are planning a kitchen remodel, it is the easiest time to add a dedicated RO faucet.
Does alkaline RO change the taste? It adds minerals back after the membrane, which many people find gives a smoother taste than plain RO water.
