Why Westchester households choose RO
WASD water from the Orr plant meets drinking water standards. People still add RO for reasons that are about preference and convenience:
- They dislike the chloramine taste in coffee, tea or plain water
- They want lower dissolved minerals for cooking and ice
- They are tired of buying and carrying bottled water
- They want one tap whose filter certifications they can look up themselves
How the stages work
- Sediment pre-filter catches particles, useful in older homes where pipes can shed sediment.
- Carbon pre-filter reduces chlorine and chloramine, which also protects the membrane.
- RO membrane reduces dissolved solids.
- Alkaline and polishing stage adds minerals back and finishes the taste.
For how alkaline models differ, read alkaline vs. standard reverse osmosis.
Fitting it under a Westchester sink
Kitchens in Westchester range from original 1960s cabinets to full remodels, and apartments along the main corridors have tighter spaces still. Jorge checks:
- Cabinet depth and the space left by the garbage disposal
- Whether the countertop can take a dedicated faucet hole, or one already exists
- Where the drain connection goes
- Whether a line can run to the refrigerator or ice maker
Contaminant claims: check the listing
RO systems are certified under NSF/ANSI 58. A certification covers only the contaminants it names, for the exact model. If you have a specific concern, such as PFAS or lead from older plumbing, look up that model's listing for that contaminant. See PFAS filters in Westchester.
RO and chloramine work together
WASD's chloramine reaches your kitchen at the main system's reported average of 2.5 ppm. In an RO system, the carbon pre-filter stages handle it before the membrane, and that also protects the membrane. If you later add a whole-home system, the RO pre-filters get an easier job. If a household's only complaint is drinking water taste, RO alone may be enough.
What if I rent? Ask your landlord first; many approve an under-sink system, especially when an existing faucet hole can be used.
Upkeep
Pre-filters, the membrane and the final stage each have their own replacement schedule. Ask for it in writing with the quote. For long-term costs, see RO maintenance and operating costs and reverse osmosis cost in Westchester.
