Start with the hardness number
Softeners are sized by how much hardness they remove per day. On lime-softened WASD water, a Westchester home may need a smaller unit than a home on raw well water, or none at all. A test avoids buying capacity you will never use.
Cost drivers
- Capacity: hardness multiplied by daily water use
- Valve type: metered regeneration uses salt and water more efficiently than timers
- Install location: garage, utility room or outdoors near the main line
- Drain: regeneration needs a drain within reach
- Plumbing: older galvanized or mixed piping can add work
- Pairing: combining with a whole-home filter for chloramine
Westchester factors that change the install
In Westchester's 1950s and 1960s homes, the main line often enters on an exterior wall, while the closest drain may be in a laundry room or garage. The distance between the two, and whether galvanized pipe must be transitioned to newer material, changes labor. Homes that already have a whole-home filter can sometimes share the same bypass loop.
Ownership costs
Ask how much salt or potassium the unit will use at your hardness, how often regeneration happens, what water it uses, and when the resin is expected to need service. See water softener cost in Florida for the general picture.
Businesses
Restaurants, laundries, salons and gyms along Bird Road and Coral Way size softening plants to their equipment. Living Water's ion-exchange plants are designed for that; the quote depends on equipment and daily volume.
Salt-free or ion exchange
Salt-free conditioners do not remove hardness minerals and do not need a drain or salt; ion-exchange softeners remove them and do. Their ownership costs are different, so compare like with like. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener. Living Water installs ion-exchange softeners.
What to ask in any quote, and next step
- Capacity and how it was calculated from your hardness
- Regeneration method and expected salt use
- Bypass valve and drain connection included
- Warranty terms for the tank, resin and valve
How long do softeners last? It depends on the model, water and maintenance; ask for the warranty terms for the tank, resin and valve.

If a softener is not justified by your hardness reading, Jorge will say so, and you will have spent nothing on the test.
