What lime treatment does, and does not do
Biscayne Aquifer groundwater picks up calcium as it moves through limestone. WASD's 2025 Water Quality Report says Orr plant water receives lime treatment to reduce hardness, then is disinfected and filtered. That is plant-scale softening, and it is the reason a Westchester home on county water often sees milder scale than a home on an untreated well.
Reduced is not zero. Some calcium and magnesium remain, and they show up where water evaporates or gets heated: shower glass, kettles, tank and tankless water heaters.
When a softener is worth it in Westchester
- Your measured hardness is high enough that spots and scale keep coming back despite cleaning
- You have a tankless water heater or appliances whose manuals call for softened water
- Your home draws drinking water from a private well, which gets none of Orr's treatment
- You run a business such as a cafe, laundromat, car wash, salon or gym on Bird Road or Coral Way where scale costs real downtime
How an ion-exchange softener works
Resin beads swap calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. When the resin is full, the unit regenerates with a brine rinse and sends that water to a drain. You add salt or potassium periodically. The result is water that no longer leaves mineral scale. If you prefer salt-free equipment, read salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener first; they work differently.
Softener or filter?
A softener does nothing for chloramine taste and odor, which is the more common complaint on WASD water. A whole-home filter does nothing for hardness. Some homes need one, some need both, and some need neither. Softener vs. filter in Westchester walks through it.
Sodium and drinking water
WASD reports sodium at 33 ppm for the main system. An ion-exchange softener adds some more, in proportion to the hardness it removes. Households that want low-mineral drinking water often add under-sink RO at the kitchen sink.
