What moves the number
| Factor | Why it matters in Westchester |
|---|---|
| System type | Whole-home for chloramine, under-sink RO for drinking water, a softener for hardness, or a combination |
| Household size and bathrooms | Flow rate decides how large the whole-home system must be |
| Plumbing age and material | Many homes date from the 1950s and 1960s; galvanized lines can take extra fittings or work |
| Install location | Outdoor near the main line versus a garage or utility room |
| Irrigation tee | Filtering only the house side keeps the system smaller |
| Well or county water | Well systems are configured from the well's test and are usually more involved |
What a good quote includes
- The exact model names and what each stage does
- Installation, including fittings, bypass valve and any drain or electrical work
- First-year service and the replacement schedule
- Warranty terms, in writing
- Anything excluded, such as permit or plumbing repairs found during install
Read why water filtration quotes differ before comparing.
Ownership costs to ask about
The purchase is one part. Ask what cartridges, media, membranes and salt (if softening) cost to replace and how often, and what service visits include. Over several years these matter as much as the install. See the annual cost of owning a whole-home filter.
Avoid paying for what you do not need
WASD's Orr plant already lime-treats for hardness, so a softener should be justified by your test, not assumed. Likewise, a household that only dislikes the taste of drinking water may do well with under-sink RO alone rather than a whole-home system. Jorge recommends only what fits.
Financing
Living Water offers financing through its financing partners. You apply with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you. Read questions to ask before you apply.
A worked example of the thinking
Two Westchester houses on the same street can get different recommendations. One family dislikes the pool smell in the showers and has a remodeled bathroom: a whole-home system at the main line is the fit. Next door, a couple only wants better coffee and has original plumbing they plan to replace: under-sink RO now, whole-home later. Same WASD water, different needs, different quotes.
