Westlake's starting point
SID buys its water from PBCWUD, which treats it and adds chloramine. SID's 2025 report says the water meets all federal, state and local regulations. A drinking water system is about taste, consistency and any specific concern you want to address.
Chloramine, at a 3.04 ppm running annual average in SID's 2025 report, is the main taste factor. Sodium, at 49.7 ppm, and other dissolved solids give the rest. Different products address those two in different ways, which is why the comparison below matters.
Four options compared
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher filter | Taste, small households | Small batches; many are not rated for chloramine |
| Fridge filter | Convenient cold water and ice | Limited contact time; check certifications |
| Under-sink alkaline RO | Drinking and cooking water, broad reduction | Needs cabinet space and a drain |
| Whole-home system | Every tap and shower | Not as thorough as RO for drinking water |
Matching to your household
- Family that cooks a lot: RO with storage or a high-output tankless model.
- Chloramine bothers you in the shower: whole-home plus RO.
- Townhome or apartment: compact RO or a certified pitcher.
- Home office or gym: Living Water's RO systems also suit offices and gyms.
Think about daily volume. A family of five that drinks, cooks and makes coffee with filtered water uses far more than a pitcher can keep up with. A couple who mostly drinks coffee might be fine with less.
Specific concerns
If PFAS, lead or another specific substance is your reason for filtering, choose a model certified for that substance (NSF/ANSI 53 or 58) and check the exact model's listing. SID's report lists UCMR 5 PFAS results supplied by PBCWUD; see PFAS filters in Westlake.
Upkeep is part of the choice
Every option depends on changing filters on time. On chloraminated water, carbon cartridges are the ones not to stretch. Ask for the schedule before you buy. See under-sink RO in Westlake and whole-house filtration vs. RO.
Certification is tested at a rated flow and capacity, so a cartridge used past its rated gallons is no longer performing as listed.
