How the system works
Living Water's alkaline RO systems are multi-stage: sediment and carbon pre-filters, a semi-permeable membrane, a post-filter, and a remineralization stage that adds minerals back for taste. The water goes to a dedicated faucet and, if you like, to the refrigerator's ice maker. They suit homes, offices, apartments and gyms.
Why the carbon stage matters in Westlake
SID's 2025 report lists chlorine and chloramines at a 3.04 ppm running annual average. Chloramine is more stable than chlorine and can degrade some RO membranes over time if it gets through, so carbon pre-filters rated for chloramine and changed on schedule protect both the taste and the membrane. Ask any installer how their pre-filters handle chloramine specifically.
During SID's periodic chlorine flush weeks, the water briefly carries more chlorine. Carbon pre-filters handle both forms, but that is another reason to keep them current. If you notice the faucet slowing or the taste changing after a flush period, check the filter schedule.
What the membrane reduces
RO membranes reduce dissolved solids such as sodium, which SID's report lists at 49.7 ppm, and many other substances. If a specific contaminant is your concern, choose a model certified for it under NSF/ANSI 58 and check that exact model's listing. See PFAS filters in Westlake for that topic.
It is not a fix for scale in the shower or the chloramine smell in the bathroom; those are whole-home jobs.
Installation in newer kitchens
- Cabinet space for the unit and a tank, or a tankless model.
- A drain connection for reject water.
- A faucet hole; quartz and stone countertops need proper drilling.
- A line to the refrigerator if you want filtered ice.
Compare tankless vs. tank RO.
Most installs take a few hours. Jorge explains where each part goes before starting and shows you how to check the faucet, tank and housings afterward. If you are still in a builder's warranty period, ask whether adding a faucet hole or drain saddle affects anything you need to know about.
Upkeep
Pre-filters and post-filters are changed on a schedule, and the membrane less often. Ask for the schedule and part numbers in writing. A slower faucet or a change in taste means you are overdue. See RO cost factors in Westlake.
RO water is also handy for coffee machines, steam irons and humidifiers, where scale from dissolved minerals builds up.
