What changed
Weston's Water and Sewer Utility page states that Sunrise stopped adding fluoride to its potable water as of July 1, in compliance with Florida Statutes 403.852 and 403.85. Weston's 2025 Water Quality Report explains that Senate Bill 700 mandated removing added fluoride from public water systems, and that future reports will focus on natural, not adjusted, fluoride content.
What the 2025 report shows
The report's inorganic contaminants table lists fluoride at 0.74 parts per million from an April 2025 sample, taken before added fluoride stopped, against a limit of 4. The report notes that natural fluoride at low, varied levels will remain in the groundwater. Expect the next report to reflect the change.
Home options
- Reverse osmosis: the most common home method for fluoride reduction. Look for NSF/ANSI 58 certification listing fluoride.
- Carbon pitchers and fridge filters: generally not designed for fluoride.
- Whole-home chloramine filters: designed for disinfectant taste and odor, not fluoride.

Staying neutral on fluoride
Some residents want less fluoride; others are now asking how to replace it. Weston's report itself notes that experts recommend alternative sources such as toothpaste and professional treatments to maintain dental health. Those decisions belong with your dentist or doctor. This page only covers what the utility does and how home equipment works.
Bonaventure and private wells
Bonaventure homes served directly by the City of Sunrise are covered by the same change, since Sunrise stopped adding fluoride across its supply. A private well was never fluoridated; any fluoride in it is natural, and a certified lab can measure it. If you are treating a well with reverse osmosis anyway, ask whether the model you are considering is certified for fluoride, so you know what to expect before deciding.
Remineralization and taste
Reverse osmosis reduces many dissolved minerals along with fluoride, which can make water taste flat to some people. Living Water's alkaline RO adds some minerals back after the membrane for taste. That is a taste preference, not a health claim. If fluoride reduction is your goal, check that the exact model's certification lists fluoride, including the alkaline models.
