What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) have been used in non-stick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging and some firefighting foams. They break down very slowly in the environment. EPA's PFAS pages explain the federal drinking water rules and timelines.
How to get the data for Weston's water
The City of Sunrise's water quality page says its Sawgrass, Southwest and Springtree public water systems have been sampled for unregulated contaminants, and that customers can request the results from the Director of Utilities:
- Email [email protected] with the subject line "UCMR5 Data" and your home address.
- Call 954-888-6000.
- Write to 777 Sawgrass Corporate Parkway, Sunrise, FL 33325.
Weston's own 2025 report lists one unregulated contaminant result, lithium at 9.9 ppb (April 2023), in its table. EPA also publishes UCMR 5 data by water system.
Choosing a PFAS filter
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification that specifically lists PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Match the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace cartridges on schedule; performance claims apply only within rated capacity.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. Jorge will tell you to check any model's certification before buying, including anything he shows you.
Testing for PFAS at home
PFAS testing requires a certified lab using EPA methods. Jorge's free in-home screening covers chloramine, hardness, TDS, pH and iron, not PFAS. He can help you read your utility data and decide what makes sense. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
Private wells
If your Weston property uses a private well, no utility data covers it. A certified lab is the only way to know whether PFAS are present. See well water in Weston.
Reading the results when you get them
UCMR 5 results are reported per water system and per compound, often in parts per trillion, with a minimum reporting level below which a result shows as not detected. Compare any detected value with EPA's current rules for PFOA, PFOS and the other regulated PFAS, which EPA explains on its PFAS drinking water pages. If something is unclear, ask the City of Sunrise when you request the data; Jorge is also happy to walk through it with you in plain words.
