What already happens at the plant
The City of Wilton Manors' 2025 Water Quality Report lists lime softening, filtration and disinfection at Fort Lauderdale's Fiveash plant. Softening lowers calcium and magnesium, the minerals that leave scale. Fort Lauderdale's new Prospect Lake Clean Water Center, which began supplying water in September 2026, uses nanofiltration and ion exchange. In other words, your water has already been softened once before it reaches the meter.
When a softener still earns its place
- Commercial kitchens, bars and coffee shops along Wilton Drive, where dishwashers, ice machines and espresso equipment run all day.
- Salons, gyms and laundries with heavy hot water use.
- Properties on a private well, which skip plant softening entirely.
- Homes where a test shows real hardness at the tap, which is uncommon on softened city water but worth checking.
Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses when the test supports it.
Softener, filter or both?
A softener exchanges hardness minerals; it does not remove chloramine. If your complaint is a chemical smell, a whole-home filter is the tool. If it is crusty white buildup on fixtures, hardness is the suspect. The softener vs. filter page walks through it.
Ion exchange vs. salt-free conditioners
An ion-exchange softener actually lowers hardness and needs salt, a drain and power. A salt-free conditioner changes how minerals behave but does not remove them, so spots on glass usually remain. For a business protecting equipment, ion exchange is the standard. See salt-free conditioner vs. ion-exchange softener.
What the test checks
Jorge measures hardness, TDS, pH and chloramine at your tap. If hardness is low, he will tell you a softener is not needed. If it is high, the number sets the size of the system, along with your household or your business's daily water use.
Commercial water in the Island City
Wilton Drive and the surrounding blocks are lined with restaurants, bars, cafes, salons and gyms, and those businesses use far more hot water per day than a household. Even moderately hard water concentrates in a water heater, a dishwasher booster or a steam wand, so scale can show up in equipment long before it shows up on a homeowner's faucet. For a business, Jorge looks at daily gallons, the equipment that needs protection, and whether a twin-tank system is needed so softened water never runs out during service. For a house, the same test often ends with the advice to skip the softener.
