Equipment drivers
- Stages and membrane output: more stages and higher capacity change the system.
- Tank or tankless: tankless saves cabinet space; see tankless vs. tank RO.
- Alkaline stage: remineralizes for taste.
- Faucet finish: matching high-end kitchen fixtures can change the faucet choice.
- Leak stop or detector: strongly worth it in a tower.
Smaller condo kitchens with shallow cabinets may point toward a compact tankless unit even if a tank model would otherwise be the default.
Installation drivers
- Countertop: using an existing hole vs. drilling quartz, granite or marble.
- Refrigerator or ice maker line: routing tubing through cabinetry.
- Old shutoff valves: sometimes replaced first.
- Building requirements: insurance certificates, work hours, elevator reservations and management notice.
Elevator reservations and loading-dock rules in larger buildings rarely affect the equipment, but they do affect timing; a good installer asks about them before scheduling rather than on the day.
Chloramine and long-term cost
The Village's 2025 data sheet lists chloramines at 2.5 ppm. RO membranes must be protected from chlorine-based disinfectants, and chloramine is slower to break down in ordinary carbon. A pre-filter suited to chloramine and changed on time protects the membrane. Ask how long each stage lasts at your household's use; your monthly domestic meter readings help estimate it.
Ownership costs to ask about
- Pre-filter and post-filter change intervals.
- Membrane life.
- Alkaline cartridge replacement.
- Water sent to drain per gallon produced.
- Whether service visits are included, and what happens while you are away for the season.
See RO filter replacement cost and RO maintenance and operating costs.
Part-time owners should also ask whether filter changes can be scheduled around their arrival, so the system starts each season fresh.
Questions that keep the quote honest
- What did my tap test show for chloramine and dissolved solids?
- Which stage handles chloramine, and how often is it changed?
- Who is responsible for the countertop during drilling?
- Is the fridge line included?
- Which building documents will you provide?
Red flags: health promises, claims that Bal Harbour's water is not drinkable, contaminant claims without a model number and certification listing, and same-day pressure. If you buy bottled water now, compare with the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
