Start with a measured number
The 2025 report describes the softening processes but does not publish a single hardness value, and the blend at your tap can shift with the season, since the utility relies more on its western wellfield and stored ASR water from December through May. A tap test gives your number. If it is low, Jorge will tell you a softener is not worth it, and he can retest in the other season if you want to be sure.
Price drivers when one fits
- Hardness and iron in the water being treated.
- Daily use: household or business volume.
- Valve type: metered regeneration on actual use.
- Installation: location, drain, power, bypass.
- Other stages on a well.
Ownership costs, in questions
- Salt or potassium per month at my use?
- Water used per regeneration, and how that shows on a bill with water and sewer usage charges?
- Resin life and service?
- Programming and settings?

Businesses
Restaurants, cafes, gyms, salons, laundries and car washes may soften to protect equipment or for spot-free rinsing. Living Water installs ion-exchange softening plants for businesses; the quote should show capacity, regeneration settings and expected salt use, based on a test and the equipment maker's water specification.
When a softener genuinely pays
A softener earns its keep where hardness is measured and scale is expensive: a private well with hard water feeding a whole house, a restaurant's dishwasher and ice machine running all day, or a laundry with commercial washers and water heaters. In those cases the useful comparison is the softener's salt and service against the equipment repairs, descaling and energy loss that scale causes. Ask the equipment maker for its water specification; it often settles the question.
Cheaper answers to common complaints
For light spots on glass, try a squeegee, rinse aid and periodic descaling first. For taste or smell, a softener will not help; that is the disinfectant, which needs a chloramine-rated carbon system. Matching the fix to the measured cause is the biggest saving.
