Start with what the County does
Broward County's 2025 report says lime and ferric chloride are added so most of the hardness and particles can be removed, followed by filtration. Neither report publishes a hardness number, so a tap test is the reliable way to decide. Many households find chloramine, not hardness, is what they notice.
If you live south of Coconut Creek Parkway, your water comes from Margate, which also lime-softens. The same test-first advice applies.
What moves softener cost
- Hardness: sets capacity and regeneration frequency.
- Volume: household size, or daily commercial use.
- Valve and tank size: matched to peak flow.
- Installation: location, drain, electrical and bypass.
- Pre-treatment on wells: iron or sulfur may need treating first.
An oversized unit wastes money up front; an undersized one regenerates constantly and uses more salt and water. Sizing from real numbers is the cheapest choice over time.
Business softening
Restaurants, laundries, car washes, gyms and offices in Coconut Creek's commercial areas often soften to protect equipment. A good quote starts from measured hardness and daily volume, plans for brine tank access and allows service without shutting down operations.
Car washes and laundries also rinse with a lot of water, and spotting on finished cars or linens is often the visible reason they soften.
Ongoing costs to ask about
- Salt or potassium use per week.
- Water used for regeneration.
- Resin life and service.
- Warranty coverage.
Demand-initiated regeneration, based on actual use, generally uses less salt than a fixed timer. See water softener cost in Florida.
HOA and placement
In Coconut Creek's HOA communities, ask where the softener and brine tank will sit and whether placement needs association approval. A spot that is hard to reach makes adding salt a chore that gets skipped.
Also ask whether the softened water will feed the kitchen faucet, or whether a separate drinking water tap is part of the plan. Either can be fine; you should know which you are paying for.
Sodium
Coconut Creek's report lists sodium at 26.5 ppm. Softening adds some sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, so many people pair a softener with RO for drinking water. If that applies, get both on the same quote.
