Softening that happens upstream
Broward County's 2025 Water Quality Report describes softening as the first step at its plants: lime and ferric chloride are added so most of the hardness and particles can be removed, followed by filtration. Neither the County's nor the city's report publishes a hardness number, so measuring at your tap is the honest way to decide.
Lime softening reduces hardness rather than eliminating it, which is normal for municipal treatment. That is why a little scale can still appear over time on hot water fixtures even when the water is not considered hard.
When a softener earns its place
- Private drinking well: raw aquifer water has not been softened. See well water in Coconut Creek.
- Restaurants and cafes: dishwashers, ice machines and espresso equipment scale up over time.
- Laundries, gyms and car washes: heavy hot water use and spotting on finished work.
- Offices and schools: water heaters and coffee equipment.
- Your tap simply tests hard.
Ion-exchange softening plants
Living Water offers ion-exchange softening plants for homes and businesses: hotels, restaurants, schools, laundries, car washes, offices and gyms. Ion exchange swaps hardness minerals for sodium or potassium and regenerates on a schedule. Sized from measured hardness and daily use, a plant runs efficiently; sized from a guess, it wastes salt or runs out early. Coconut Creek's business areas along Lyons Road, Sample Road and Hillsboro Boulevard include many of the kinds of businesses that soften for equipment protection.
For a business, the cost of scale shows up as service calls, slower ice production and shorter equipment life. Matching the plant to the equipment manufacturer's water requirements is usually the goal.
Sodium and drinking water
Coconut Creek's 2025 report lists sodium at 26.5 ppm. Softening adds some sodium in proportion to the hardness removed. If that matters to you, pair a softener with an under-sink RO for drinking and cooking.
Softener or filter?
If the issue is a chlorine-like smell, a softener will not help; that is chloramine. See chloramine filters and softener vs. filter. If the issue is spots on glass, read hard water spots in Coconut Creek first, since dissolved solids cause spots too.
