System design
- Number of stages and whether an alkaline or remineralization stage is included.
- Tank vs. tankless: tankless saves cabinet space and often costs more up front. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Production rate and waste-water ratio.
- Faucet style and finish.
Your provider's water
Water from CSID and NSID has already been through membrane treatment at the plant, so dissolved solids are usually low and the home membrane has an easier job. City of Coral Springs water is lime-softened, with total dissolved solids listed at 194 ppm in the 2025 report, so the drop at the RO faucet is typically more noticeable. Either way, the carbon pre-filter must handle chloramine to protect the membrane, and its change interval is part of the ongoing cost.
Installation in your kitchen
- Spare faucet hole, or countertop drilling (stone counters take more time).
- Drain connection.
- Refrigerator or ice-maker line.
- Space under the sink, including around a garbage disposal.
- HOA rules for townhomes and condos.
Ongoing costs to ask about
- Pre-filter and post-filter change intervals.
- Membrane life with your water.
- Alkaline cartridge replacement.
- What a service visit includes.
See RO filter replacement cost and bottled water vs. RO.
Waste water
RO sends part of the water to the drain. Ask for the model's waste-water ratio; designs with a permeate pump or efficient tankless membranes waste less. For most households, the effect on the water bill is modest compared with filter changes.
What the quote should show
The model name, NSF/ANSI 58 certification and any specific reduction claims, equipment and labor separately, warranty and the maintenance schedule. Living Water offers financing through its financing partners; you apply with a credit application, and a co-applicant can apply with you.
Ways to keep RO costs reasonable
- Choose the stages your water needs, not the most stages available.
- Change pre-filters on schedule to protect the membrane.
- Pick a faucet that fits an existing hole to avoid drilling.
- Include a fridge line at installation if you want one, instead of adding it later.
Also ask whether the alkaline stage is a separate cartridge, since that adds a replacement item, and whether the quoted price includes the first set of replacement filters.
Waste water also differs by model, so ask for the ratio in writing.
On Coral Springs water, the pre-filter schedule matters more than the faucet finish, because chloramine is present on every provider we reviewed. Budget for those changes from day one.
