Three suppliers, two disinfectants
| Utility | Disinfectant in its 2025 report |
|---|---|
| City of Dania Beach | Chlorine: 2.88 ppm average, range 1.0 to 3.6 |
| Broward County WWS | Chloramines (chlorine and ammonia) |
| City of Hollywood | Chloramines: 2.42 ppm average |
The city's report does not say whether ammonia is added, only that the residual is reported as chlorine. A test of total and free chlorine at your tap shows what you actually have.
Why plain carbon may struggle with chloramine
- Stability: chloramine is built to last longer in the pipes, so it reacts more slowly with standard carbon.
- Contact time: it needs more time in the media; small, fast-flow cartridges let more pass.
- Capacity: filters can be used up faster than the label suggests.
Free chlorination periods
Utilities that use chloramine often switch to free chlorine for a few weeks to maintain the pipes. Broward County describes free chlorination as a common practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection, and posts the dates by district; for example, its District 2 period runs September 28 to October 19, 2026. During those weeks the water may taste or smell more like a pool. Aquarium owners should ask about dechlorination at these times.
What to look for in a filter
- Catalytic carbon or media designed for chloramine.
- A chloramine reduction claim on the exact model's NSF/ANSI 42 listing; a chlorine claim alone does not cover chloramine.
- Sizing for your peak flow so the water gets enough contact time.
Living Water describes its Puronics Clarius iGen and Goodspring whole-home systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. More in the chloramine filter guide.
Whole-home or kitchen only
A whole-home system treats every shower and faucet. If you only care about drinking water, an under-sink RO system with carbon stages may be enough.
Aquariums, ponds and dialysis
Chloramine affects more than taste. Fish keepers need a dechlorinator that handles chloramine, not just chlorine. Anyone on home dialysis should follow their care team's instructions on water treatment. These are specialist situations; a home filter is not a substitute for that advice.
