First, find out which utility serves your street
The City of Dania Beach says its properties receive water service from one of three utilities depending on location: the City of Dania Beach, Broward County or the City of Hollywood. The city publishes a Utility Service Area Map so you can check your property. Your provider decides which annual Water Quality Report applies to you, who handles billing and service calls, and which emergency notices you receive.
The quickest check is your water bill. If it comes from the City of Dania Beach, the city report below is yours. If it comes from Broward County Water and Wastewater Services or from Hollywood Public Utilities, read that utility's report instead. Jorge asks this at the start of every Dania Beach visit, because the treatment advice changes with the answer.
The city system: two softening processes, blended
According to the city's 2025 Water Quality Report, Dania Beach serves about 30,000 residents. Its water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer. The city owns two wells on the eastern edge of the aquifer and also buys water from the Broward County Regional Wellfield at Brian Piccolo Park. In 2025, the report says, the city took its own wells out of service and used only the Regional Wellfield supply.
At the plant, the water goes through two processes:
- Lime softening (a three-million-gallon-capacity plant), which precipitates calcium carbonate to soften the water, followed by filtration.
- Nanofiltration membranes (a two-million-gallon plant added in November 2011).
The two streams are blended at roughly 50/50 before entering the pipes. The city describes the nanofiltration plant as the first LEED Gold certified water plant in the world, earned in 2012.
Disinfectant and other numbers in the city report
| Item (2025 report) | Result |
|---|---|
| Chlorine residual | 2.88 ppm average, range 1.0 to 3.6 (limit 4.0) |
| Sodium | 22 ppm (sampled 2023) |
| Total trihalomethanes | 8.98 ppb (limit 80) |
| Haloacetic acids | 24.14 ppb (limit 60) |
| Lead, 90th percentile | 1.1 ppb (sampled 2023; action level 15) |
The report lists the residual as chlorine and does not say whether ammonia is added. Broward County and Hollywood both disinfect with chloramines. Either way, a filter for Dania Beach should be rated for chloramine, because one that handles chloramine also handles free chlorine. See chlorine and chloramine filters.
If Broward County or Hollywood serves you
- Broward County Water and Wastewater Services: its 2025 report says it treats Biscayne Aquifer water with lime and ferric chloride to reduce hardness and color, filters it, and disinfects with chloramines. One county report covers districts 1A, 2A, 3A and 3B/C, and the county notes that the City of Hollywood provides the water for its 3A and 3B/C systems.
- City of Hollywood: its 2025 report describes wells in both the Biscayne and the deeper, brackish Floridan Aquifer, lime softening and membrane filtration, reverse osmosis for the Floridan water, and chloramine disinfection at an average of 2.42 ppm.
Fluoride and PFAS in brief
Florida law effective July 1, 2025 prohibits adding substances to public water that are not for improving water quality, which ended added fluoride statewide. Hollywood confirms it stopped then. See fluoride filters. The city's 2025 report also publishes PFOA and PFOS results from EPA's UCMR 5 study; see PFAS filters in Dania Beach.
What fits a Dania Beach home
- Condo or apartment near the beach or the Intracoastal: usually an under-sink alkaline RO system for drinking and cooking water. Compare options in best drinking water system.
- Single-family home: a whole-home city water system for disinfectant taste and odor at every tap.
- Restaurant, hotel or marina business: an ion-exchange water softening plant where equipment needs scale protection, sized after a test.
- Irrigation or private well: see well water treatment.
Every Dania Beach topic, and how to book
Problems: rotten-egg smell, orange stains, hard water spots, dry skin after showering. Choosing: softener vs. filter. Costs: filtration, reverse osmosis, softener. Testing: home water testing.
