What PFAS are
The city's report describes PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) as manufactured chemicals used since the 1950s in coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease and water. Most do not break down, so they persist in the environment and are found at low levels around the world. PFOA and PFOS are the most studied and have been phased out of production in the United States.
Dania Beach's results
| Compound | Average | Range |
|---|---|---|
| PFOS | 0.0129 ppb (12.9 ppt) | 0.0119 to 0.0139 ppb |
| PFOA | 0.0056 ppb (5.6 ppt) | 0.0055 to 0.0058 ppb |
Samples were taken in March and August 2025 and reported in the unregulated contaminants table. One part per billion (ppb) equals 1,000 parts per trillion (ppt); many news stories use ppt, so convert before comparing. Broward County and Hollywood publish their own PFAS results for their customers. EPA's national PFAS drinking water rules are still being implemented, so check EPA's site for the current status, and direct questions about the results to your utility.
Filters: what certification to look for
- NSF/ANSI 53 (carbon and other filters) and NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) include claims for PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- The claim must be on the exact model, not the brand or technology in general.
- Look the model up in the certifier's public listing before you buy.
RO and certain carbon systems are the technologies usually certified, but not every product in those categories carries the claim.
What Jorge can and cannot do
Jorge can walk you through your utility's report, explain options and help you check whether a model carries a PFOA/PFOS listing. An in-home screening does not measure PFAS; that needs a certified laboratory. Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS, so if PFAS reduction is your goal, choose on a verified certification listing.
On a well?
Private wells are not part of any utility's monitoring. If PFAS is a concern for a well, test it through a certified lab. See well water in Dania Beach.
