What Jorge measures
- Total and free chlorine: shows the disinfectant level at your tap. The city reports chlorine at a 2.88 ppm average; Broward County and Hollywood use chloramines.
- Hardness: confirms the plant softening is reaching you.
- pH and total dissolved solids: help explain taste and what an RO system would change.
- Iron and sulfur signs if you are on a well or see stains or smells.
Your utility report vs. your tap
Each utility publishes an annual Water Quality Report, also called a Consumer Confidence Report. The City of Dania Beach's 2025 report covers its system; Broward County and Hollywood publish their own. Those reports describe water leaving the plant and samples across the system. Your tap adds your own pipes, water heater and any existing filters. That is why both are useful: the report tells you what the utility does, the test tells you what you get.
Lead: what the city offers
The city's 2025 report says that if you are concerned about lead and want your water tested, you can contact Nate Costa at the water treatment plant at (954) 924-3747. It also says the lead service line inventory is available through a public records request to the city clerk. The city's most recent lead sampling (2023) showed a 90th percentile of 1.1 ppb against an action level of 15.
When to use a certified lab
A lab test is the right tool for bacteria, nitrate, lead, PFAS and other specific contaminants. Florida keeps a list of certified laboratories. For private wells, the Florida Department of Health recommends testing for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year. See home screening vs. lab analysis.
What happens at the visit
- Jorge asks which utility bills you and what you notice: taste, smell, spots, stains.
- He tests at the kitchen tap and, if useful, another fixture.
- He explains each number and what it means for your home.
- He recommends a system only if it fits, or tells you that you do not need one.
