Same aquifer, no treatment plant
Dania Beach's utility water starts in the Biscayne Aquifer too. The city's 2025 report says its two wells sit on the eastern edge of the aquifer and that in 2025 it used water from the Broward County Regional Wellfield instead. The difference is what happens next: the city lime-softens, nanofilters and disinfects that water. A private well delivers the aquifer's water as it is, with its hardness, color, iron and any sulfur.
The city notes it softens because of the hardness and slight coloration of Biscayne Aquifer water. A home well has the same starting point.
Irrigation wells vs. drinking wells
- Irrigation well: feeds sprinklers only. The usual complaints are orange stains on walls, pavers and pool decks and a sulfur smell outdoors.
- Private drinking well: supplies the house. Treatment usually targets iron, hydrogen sulfide, hardness and anything a lab test finds.
Coastal location
Dania Beach sits near the coast and the Intracoastal Waterway. Utility reports list saltwater intrusion as a possible source of sodium in drinking water. If you rely on a well near the coast, include sodium, chloride and total dissolved solids in the test, because they shape what treatment can and cannot do.
Testing and permits
The Florida Department of Health says private well owners are responsible for their own water and recommends a state-certified lab test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year, and lead every three years for most homeowners. Florida does not require well sampling when a private home is sold, so buyers should arrange it themselves.
In Broward County, wells 12 inches in diameter or smaller, including irrigation wells, need a permit from DOH-Broward for construction, repair, modification or abandonment, done by a licensed water well driller.
How a well system is built
Jorge's free in-home test covers iron, hardness, pH, dissolved solids and sulfur signs. Combined with a lab result, it tells you what the system must do. Living Water configures well treatment with Puronics equipment, which can combine stages for iron and sulfur, softening, and a drinking water stage at the kitchen. If a lab finds bacteria or a specific contaminant, the equipment must be certified for it under the relevant NSF/ANSI standard. See the well water system and UV vs. RO for well water.
