The hot-vs-cold check
- Run cold water at the kitchen tap and smell it.
- Run hot water at the same tap and smell it.
- Check another faucet, and the outdoor spigot if you have irrigation from a well.
- Hot only: points to the water heater.
- Hot and cold, on a well: points to sulfur in the well water.
- One sink only: can be the drain, not the water. Smell a glass of water away from the sink.
City water and the water heater
Dania Beach utility water is softened and disinfected before delivery; the city reports a chlorine residual and Broward County and Hollywood use chloramines. A sulfur smell from the hot side alone is rarely a utility problem. Inside a tank heater, the anode rod (often magnesium) can react with sulfate and bacteria and form hydrogen sulfide, especially when hot water sits unused, for example in a seasonal condo. A plumber or the water heater maker can advise on flushing the tank or replacing the anode with a different type.
Well water and hydrogen sulfide
Some Dania Beach properties use wells for irrigation, and a few may use one for the house. Groundwater can carry hydrogen sulfide naturally. On a well, the smell usually shows in both hot and cold water and can be stronger after the water sits. Treatment depends on the level: aeration, oxidation with filtration, or catalytic media. Compare approaches in aeration vs. filtration for sulfur smells.
When to call the utility
If cold utility water smells unusual at every tap, call your provider. For City of Dania Beach water, the 2025 report lists the plant operations manager at (954) 924-6800, ext. 3616. Broward County and Hollywood customers should use the numbers on their bills.
What Jorge tests
- Hot and cold samples to separate the heater from the supply.
- Iron, pH and hardness, which affect sulfur treatment on a well.
- Disinfectant level on utility water.
On a well, Living Water configures a well water system from the test. See well water treatment in Dania Beach.
