What each one does
| Softener | Filter | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Removes calcium and magnesium (hardness) | Reduces disinfectant, taste, odor and other targeted substances |
| Fixes | Scale, spots, soap scum | Pool-like taste and smell, some contaminants if certified |
| Upkeep | Salt and regeneration | Media or cartridge replacement |
Why most Dania Beach homes start with a filter
The city's 2025 report describes lime softening plus nanofiltration, blended about 50/50. Broward County lime-softens and Hollywood adds membranes and reverse osmosis. After that work at the plant, the thing many residents still notice is the disinfectant: the city reports chlorine averaging 2.88 ppm, and the county and Hollywood use chloramines. That points to a chloramine-rated whole-home filter or a kitchen RO system.
When a softener comes first
- Private well: untreated Biscayne Aquifer water is hard. A well system usually combines iron and sulfur treatment with softening.
- Persistent scale: if a test shows hardness at the tap and you see scale on fixtures and glass, see hard water spots in Dania Beach.
- Commercial equipment: where scale protection matters for heaters and machines.
When you need both
Some homes, mainly on wells, need a softener and a filter. On utility water, needing both is less common, and a test should show it before you pay for it. The general logic is laid out in softener vs. filter: which do you need.
A quick way to tell which problem you have
- Pool-like taste or smell: a disinfectant problem, so a filter.
- White crust on faucets and shower heads: likely hardness, so test it, then consider a softener.
- Orange stains outside: iron from a well, a different filter entirely. See orange stains.
- Rotten-egg smell from hot water only: usually the water heater. See sulfur smell.
Businesses in Dania Beach
Restaurants and hotels often need both: softening to protect water heaters and dishwashers, and filtration for taste in drinks and ice. Living Water's ion-exchange softening plants are sized for the business after a test, and filtration is specified separately.
