What is in your shower water
- Disinfectant: the City of Dania Beach reports a chlorine residual averaging 2.88 ppm; Broward County and Hollywood use chloramines. Many people associate the disinfectant smell with how the shower feels.
- Hardness: all three utilities soften their water, so hardness is usually not the main factor on utility water. On a well it can be.
- Hot water and long showers also play a part, apart from the water itself.
What a test shows
Jorge tests total and free chlorine and hardness at your tap. If the disinfectant is high and hardness is low, a filter is the logical comfort step. If hardness is high, for example on a well, softening may be the bigger factor. He explains which one you have before suggesting anything.
Whole-home or shower filter?
- Whole-home filtration: treats every shower and tap with media sized for chloramine. Living Water describes its Puronics systems as removing chloramine and chlorine. See whole-home filtration in Dania Beach.
- Shower-head filters: small and inexpensive, but short contact time makes chloramine harder to handle. Check the exact product's chloramine claim.
Seasonal changes
Utilities that use chloramine may switch to free chlorine for a few weeks to maintain the pipes; Broward County posts these periods on its water quality page. If your shower smells stronger for a few weeks, that may be the reason.
Comfort, not medicine
A filter can change how the water smells and feels. It is not a treatment for eczema, psoriasis or any skin condition. If you have a skin problem, a dermatologist is the right person to see.
Simple things to try first
Before buying any equipment, a few habits are worth trying for two or three weeks:
- Shorter, slightly cooler showers.
- Moisturizer applied right after drying off.
- Gentle, fragrance-free soap.
If those help and you still notice a strong disinfectant smell, a test shows whether filtration is worth considering.
