What changed in 2025
- County decision: WASD's 2025 report says fluoridation ended to comply with County Resolution R-370-25, approved May 6, 2025, and Florida Senate Bill 700.
- State law: section 403.859 of the Florida Statutes now prohibits using any additive in a public water system that does not meet the definition of a water quality additive. The bill took effect July 1, 2025.
- What remains: after fluoridation stopped, WASD reports main system fluoride ranging from 0.1 to 0.3 ppm, from levels naturally present in the soil and the Biscayne Aquifer.
Reading older reports
Water quality reports summarize a full year. WASD's 2025 table still shows a yearly fluoride result of 1 ppm (range 0.1 to 1) because the first months of 2025 were before the change. Footnotes explain the switch. Reports covering 2026 should reflect natural levels only.
How home systems handle fluoride
- Reverse osmosis: the membrane rejects most dissolved minerals, fluoride among them.
- Activated alumina: a specialty medium; performance depends on contact time and pH.
- Ordinary carbon: most pitchers and fridge filters are not designed for fluoride.
For any product, check that the exact model is certified for fluoride reduction, typically under NSF/ANSI 58 for RO.
Alkaline RO in your kitchen
Living Water's under-sink alkaline RO uses a multi-stage design with a dedicated faucet and a final stage that adds minerals back. Ask Jorge for the certification listing of the specific model so you can confirm its reduction claims. Compare designs in alkaline vs. standard RO.
Whole-home systems and fluoride
Whole-home carbon systems are designed for chloramine, taste and odor, not fluoride. If fluoride is your concern, the practical approach is RO at the kitchen sink, where you drink and cook, rather than treating shower and laundry water. That also keeps the system small and the filter changes simple. Many households combine a whole-home filter for chloramine with RO for drinking water.
Health questions
This page does not argue for or against fluoride. For questions about fluoride and your family's teeth or health, talk with your dentist or doctor. For equipment questions, call, text or WhatsApp Jorge at (305) 793-5974.
