The three biggest drivers
- System type. Under-sink RO for one faucet, a whole-home carbon system for every tap, or both. A softener is a separate item, and with town-softened water it is often unnecessary.
- Your water. Chlorine level, dissolved solids and any hardness measured at your tap set media type and size.
- Installation. Main-line access, drain and power, outdoor housing against salt air, and condo association requirements.
Why the town's treatment can lower your cost
The Town of Hillsboro Beach Water Department treats its Biscayne Aquifer water to remove hardness and then chlorinates it, according to its 2025 report. Two consequences for your quote:
- You may not need a softener at all if your tap test agrees.
- Free chlorine is easier for activated carbon than chloramine, so media choices can be simpler. Ask how the quoted media was chosen.
What a fair quote should list
| Include | Watch for |
|---|---|
| Exact model numbers and certifications | Vague "premium system" wording |
| Installation scope, bypass valve, permits if needed | Installation priced separately later |
| Filter and media replacement schedule | No mention of ongoing costs |
| Warranty terms in writing | Equipment you did not ask for |
More in why installation quotes differ.
For a condo, also ask whether the quote assumes access to a shared utility room, and who pays if the building requires its own plumber or a certificate of insurance.
Ongoing costs to ask about
- Whole-home media life at your water use and chlorine level.
- RO prefilter, post-filter and membrane intervals.
- Service visits, if any are included.
- Water sent to the drain by RO, which shows up on a water bill billed by the gallon.

Questions that keep a quote honest
- What did you measure at my tap, and how did that change what you are quoting?
- Is a softener on this quote, and why, if the town already treats to remove hardness?
- What happens if the equipment does not fit through my condo's service area or needs association approval?
- What is included in the installation, and what would be extra?
- What will I spend on filters and media in a typical year, in terms of parts and intervals?
