| Limit | 4 ppm | 4 ppm |
Jupiter marks its fluoride entry with a note that fluoride is found naturally in its source water, the surficial aquifer, and that the town does not add it to its treatment process.
Why the levels are low
Both utilities treat groundwater with nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, membranes that reduce many dissolved minerals. What remains is the small natural amount reported each year.
Seacoast describes nanofiltration as demineralization, which explains the low numbers.
If you want less
- Under-sink RO: the common method; check its NSF/ANSI 58 listing for fluoride reduction.
- Ordinary carbon filters generally do not reduce fluoride.
- Whole-home filters target chloramine, not fluoride.
Distillation is another home method, slower and more energy-intensive than RO. Bottled water fluoride varies by brand; the label or bottler can tell you.
Health questions
We make no health claims for or against fluoride. Talk with your dentist or doctor about fluoride for your family.
If you have young children, your pediatrician or dentist can also advise on fluoride from other sources, such as toothpaste.
Neighbors compared
Fluoride levels in northern Palm Beach County membrane-treated water are low across the board. Jupiter's 0.088 ppm and Seacoast's 0.13 ppm are both small fractions of the 4 ppm maximum. If you moved here from a city that fluoridated its water until recently, the difference at your tap is real, but it comes from treatment and policy, not from anything your filter did.
He also checks chloramine at the same tap, since the RO carbon stages handle that too.
A TDS meter reading is not a fluoride measurement, but it shows the membrane working. For a fluoride-specific number, a certified lab test is the tool.
What an RO system reduces and adds
A home RO membrane reduces many dissolved solids, fluoride among them, and the carbon stages handle chloramine. An alkaline stage then adds a small amount of minerals back for taste. Check the model's performance data sheet to see each claim and its certification. See alkaline vs. standard RO.
