What PFAS are
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of chemicals that resist water, grease and heat. They show up in cookware coatings, food packaging, outdoor gear, carpet treatments and some firefighting foams, and they break down very slowly. PFOA and PFOS are the two most studied.
What the Town of Jupiter reports
- The Town participated in the EPA's third and fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule rounds (UCMR 3 and UCMR 5); its 2025 report says it took part in UCMR 5 in 2023 and that results can be requested from the utility.
- Its PFAS Information page says all analytes historically tested below the method minimum reporting limit.
- The Town attributes this largely to its reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane plants, which it says research identifies among the best available technologies for PFAS.
The Town's water supply plan also says that its strategy for upcoming PFAS rules includes retiring its small ion exchange plant and adding another nanofiltration train.
Wells are a different question
The Town's PFAS page has its own section for people on well water, which matters in Jupiter Farms, where homes use private wells. A private well is only tested if the owner tests it, and PFAS testing requires a certified laboratory.
Choosing a home filter for PFAS
- Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (filters) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) certification listing PFOA and PFOS reduction.
- Check the exact model number on the certifier's listing.
- Replace filters on the schedule the certification assumes.
Living Water does not claim its systems remove PFAS. If PFAS is your priority, verify the certification of anything you consider, including anything Jorge offers.
Reading future reports
National PFAS rules are still being phased in, and monitoring requirements change. Each year's report, distributed by July 1 with results for the prior year, is the place to look for new numbers. The Town's PFAS page also includes a list of frequently asked questions covering exposure, regulation and well water.
What a home visit covers
Jorge's free test covers chloramine, hardness, dissolved solids and pH. It is not a PFAS test. See home screening vs. lab analysis. Call, text or WhatsApp (305) 793-5974.
