What drives the price
- System type: tank vs. tankless under-sink units. See tankless vs. tank RO.
- Stages: pre-filters, membrane, post-carbon and an alkaline remineralization stage.
- Faucet: a new hole in stone countertops vs. an existing sprayer hole.
- Extras: a refrigerator or ice maker line.
- Cabinet space and access to a drain.
Why Jupiter water is easy on an RO
An RO membrane works harder on water high in dissolved solids. Jupiter's Town water is a blend of reverse osmosis and nanofiltration water, so the load on a home membrane is typically lighter than in towns with untreated or lime-softened groundwater. That can affect how long the membrane lasts. The pre-filters still need to handle chloramine, which the Town lists at a highest annual average of 2.99 ppm.
Ownership costs to ask about
- How often each pre-filter and post-filter is changed.
- Expected membrane life on your water.
- How much water goes to drain per gallon made.
- Who does the service, and whether reminders are included.
More: RO maintenance and operating costs.
Compared with bottled water
Some Jupiter households buy bottled water for drinking and coffee. Whether RO makes sense is a comparison of your household's use against filter changes. See the bottled water vs. RO calculator.
Well homes
On a Jupiter Farms well, an RO is usually the last stage after iron, sulfur or hardness treatment. Without those, the membrane fouls faster. The quote should show the whole sequence.
Questions that keep the quote honest
- What dissolved solids reading did you get at my tap, and what will the RO bring it to?
- Which stages are included, and which are optional?
- How long does each filter and the membrane last on Jupiter water?
- What happens if the faucet hole has to go through quartz or granite?
- Is a fridge line included, and is it worth it for my fridge model?
